Thinking Day on the Air 1999
GB0WWB
Golf Bravo Zero Williamwood Brownies
The 4th Williamwood Brownies, Thursday pack, were on air , briefly, Saturday 20 February 1999 10am - 1pm GMT.
The Brownies were working on their Radio Communications Badges.
We were on 20 Metres (14MHz) and 2 Metres (145MHz).
Despite the wet and windy weather , we managed to put our antennae in place. Our first contacts were on 2 Metres with amateurs in Scotland.
We contacted Fred, GM0GOV, near Dunlop in Ayrshire and Graham GM0AAX/Mobile heading home to fix his greenhouse in Kilmarnock!
The girls had prepared greetings messages for contacts with other Brownies and Guides. (Part of the badge work).
Some of the Brownies passed their greetings messages on 2 Metres, others were using a Trio R1000 receiver to listen into some of the amateur HF frequencies.
After a struggle to adjust the 20
Metre dipole we did eventually have ONE foreign contact with Ludwig, OE3MLC, 7km from
Vienna, Austria.
We lost some air-time on HF due to a problem with the cable to the dipole and as we were running only 10 watts on 20 Metres it was hard for other stations to hear us.
Equipment for GB0WWB was arranged by Alistair, GM0FLO. The Brownies were led, as usual, by Brown Owl (Jean Little) and Tawny Owl (Joan Black).
Many thanks to all who ventured along to GB0WWB, through the wet weather, Brownies, Mums, Dads, wee brothers and sisters alike.
Special thanks to Donald Corrigan (Church Officer), for his patience and assistance in accessing parts of the church grounds we didn't know about before.
Next year we shall be better prepared and perhaps have more time on air to make distant contacts.
We hope to have some photographs of GB0WWB on this page soon.
